It was always my desire to know what goes on within the MBA classrooms, for I was fascinated by the concept of management. I had always known and believed that management was nothing more than proper usage of common sense with loads of jargon and theories. My belief was somewhat confirmed the other day when the Prof conceded that management is indeed common sense and they are just trying to tell us how to use common sense more efficiently. The background goes something like this: She was telling us about Human Resource Management in an organization (not a company - usage of jargon you see), where she explained what a manager is supposed to do and what are his duties/responsibilities. While throughout the lecture I was wondering why it takes an MBA to realise all this, I couldn't stop myself from telling her that I felt it was no more than common sense. And she nodded in affirmation.
It is true that at some level each one of us is a manager. AND we learn the tricks and trades of being a manager over time, over experiences and over discussions. That implies you can't transform an innate non-manager (an operative, using the jargon) into a 'manager' over a period of two years. Also, a really good manager doesn't need a Harvard or an IIM degree to prove his worth.

On a very related note, I quote to you one of the best statements I've heard in my life, when PBK told this to me
"The main problem seems to lie in the fact that common sense is not common"
And your POM course is very stud da. You won't realise it now. You'll realise it a year later. Please please pay attention, listen to it, don't assume common sense can guide you. At the end of the day, your ability to define things like 'power' and 'responsibility' gives you a broader feel of the whole thing - when you start believing in things - you refine yourself etc.
Blah, I can keep going on, but lets reserve it for when we meet.
@ CB:
T for you to put pseud like PBK
@ Lays: T for you too. Allow anonymous comments.
Allow anon comments?! I don't get the reason. Anyways, DONE.
Ya, it's working.

"MBA is nothing more than common sense." - is exactly what I felt too. Verified with a fellow classmate at an IIM. Then took up master's in EP. :) I hope I'm not proved wrong, though I don't think there's any chance for that. Doubt is good (Feynman says, you know )

but dude if MBA is just about common sense then why one would pay such a heavy price(pun intended)for its glorification....
because the fact lies in common sense not being common...
